On Monday, November 23 at about 3AM, a driver in South Los Angeles hit
a man riding a bicycle near Broadway and Vernon Avenue. The driver of
the passenger vehicle immediately fled the scene. Photographs show the
bike lying distorted in the street.
After the bicyclist was hit, bystanders who witnessed the accident surrounded
the man to protect his body until police and medical professionals arrived.
The victim was a male in his 30s. Reports state the man suffered severe
head trauma and is in critical condition. The Los Angeles Police Department’s
Traffic Division is doing everything in their power to locate the driver at fault.
Safety Tips for Bicyclists
In busy cities, such as Los Angeles, riding a bike can be one of the most
efficient forms of transportation. However, riding a bicycle can also
be very dangerous due to their small size when compared to the trucks,
cars, and buses that share the road. In fact, the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration states that in 2013, 743 individuals suffered fatal
injuries in bike accidents, and an additional 44,704 people suffered serious,
but not deadly, injuries.
If you ride a bicycle on busy city streets, consider the following safety tips:
- Use hand signals when changing lanes or turning.
- Avoid riding in the blind spots of large vehicles.
- Use bike lanes when available.
- Never assume drivers can see you.
- Wear bright and reflective clothing.
