One man killed, another injured in car-motorcycle accident

A man was killed and another person wounded after a recent motorcycle accident in Long Beach. Police said the motorcyclists had a green light, and the driver involved in the accident is under investigation.

The two motorcyclists were close friends who were rising Harley Davidson motorcycles when the accident happened at about 8:45 p.m. They were attempting to cross an avenue and had a green light. The driver of an SUV crossed the intersection and hit them, police said. A 35-year-old man was killed and a 30-year-old man was injured. The 30-year-old has been released from the hospital.

The driver, 68, is a well-known restaurant driver. Police are investigating, and said the driver could face criminal charges including vehicular manslaughter.

Motorcyclists have the same rights on the road as larger vehicles. Unfortunately, they are not as visible as drivers of passenger cars and SUVs. Because of their small size and lack of protections, motorcyclists are more likely to receive serious injuries such as spinal cord injuries, brain injuries and broken bones. They're also more likely to be killed in an accident than drivers of larger vehicles.

While motorcyclists can take precautions such as wearing helmets and driving defensively, other drivers also need to watch for motorcyclists and give them plenty of room.
