Truck and bus collide on Vegas romp

When you have a heavy pickup truck slam at high speed into the side of a double-decker tour bus on its way to Las Vegas, you are unfortunately likely to have a fatal truck accident, a lot of shaken and injured people and in this case a traffic jam 20 miles long.

The fiery scene on northbound I-15 just after 11 a.m. left the driver of the pickup dead, the driver of the bus seriously injured and 30 Chinese tourists stranded, with a number transported to hospitals. According to police reports, the pickup truck -- for reasons unknown at this time -- careened over the median strip and slammed into the side of an Eagle Tours bus that had started its trip in El Monte and was headed to Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, as the required accident investigation and reconstruction was ongoing, the drivers headed toward Las Vegas were jamming up mile after mile as evening approached. California Highway Patrol officials had found it necessary to shut down both lanes of the I-15 shortly after the crash. Finally, the stalled drivers were instructed to turn around or detour to Vegas via back roads. As a consequence, a good part of the available CHP's troopers were occupied by either directing traffic or pulling free cars that had gotten stuck on the sandy byroads.

It was a continuing nightmare for the uninjured, who remained in the vicinity of the stricken and partially crushed bus. They had to wait hour after hour until another coach arrived to finally allow them to continue their interrupted passage.

Left behind them was the grisly wreckage of the pick-up truck, which had burst into flames immediately upon impact with the side of the bus. The near-incinerated remains of the driver have not as yet been identified.

Once investigators piece together exactly what happened and where any liabilities rest, it will be time to retain an experienced truck accident attorney, who will help put this nightmare to rest.
