Victim of spine injury in California, still recovering

A healthy and fitness-minded bicyclist was merrily pumping along at 6:30 a.m. on July 15 when he was hit by a car on Sierra Highway north of Vasquez Canyon Road. The driver never even paused. Eventually the severely broken cyclist was rushed to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital with a broken back and numerous lacerations and abrasions, according to the California Highway Patrol. But this was just the beginning of his ordeal as any spinal cord injury can be devastating and long lasting.

In our cyclist's case he was lucky that the fierce impact did not permanently sever his spine. He was transferred quickly to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he began physical therapy as part his rehabilitation. A friend revealed that his journey to being a whole man again is proving to be a long one, noting that nearly two months after the crash, he's still confined to the hospital.

As to the perpetrator, he very nobly turned himself into authorities only four hours after the hit-and-run. He was being held on $50,000 bond. He is 29 years old. He is facing serious hit-and-run charges.

While the spokeswoman at Kaiser said she could not divulge information regarding any patient at the hospital, the friend revealed some of the rigors of rehabilitation. First, he thanked God that the spinal column was not severed. If so, this would be a wholly different ball game.

As experts reveal, however, for people with a spinal cord injury there can be added health benefits to exercise. If you are able to be physically active, you have a lower risk of developing secondary complications such as urinary tract infections, pressure sores, and respiratory illness. Physical activity can also help you better manage problems such as spasticity, weight gain, and chronic pain. It can help improve your strength and endurance, which in turn can improve your ability to accomplish everyday tasks.

A good plaintiff's attorney may very well help him to pay for the prolonged program that can help him reach his target of cycling again.
