Man awarded $58 million for head injuries from horrific beating

Jurors have awarded a Los Angeles-area man $58 million for the life-changing brain injuries he received when an unlicensed security guard beat him to unconsciousness at a bar. The former house painter can no longer care for himself and had to be supported by relatives when he appeared at a news conference to announce the jury verdict. The beating left him with a permanently disfigured skull.

His attorneys say the security guard should not have been working when the man was attacked. They filed a personal injury lawsuit against the security company that provided guards for the bar. At trial, 12 jurors unanimously agreed to award the man $58 million. His attorneys expect the security company to appeal.

The injured man and three relatives were at a neighborhood bar when they were attacked by a security guard. One of the men became involved in a dispute with a bartender, who attacked him with brass knuckles. A security guard then began beating and kicking the group. The injured man intervened, asking the security guard not to hit his family. The guard then smashed the man's head on the concrete multiple times and beat the man to unconsciousness.

The man was so severely beaten that part of his skull was gone. Doctors were able to save his life, but he will never be as functional as he was before the assault. The man's skull was bashed in so severely that his head is permanently disfigured. His attorney described the man's skull as being like a pie with 25 percent cut out of it. The man needs 24-hour care and cannot speak.
