Product liability: Collapsible hampers can cause eye injuries

Collapsible laundry hampers are convenient. They are simple to transport and store because they fold so easily. But after two children came to the same hospital with puncture wounds received from the hampers, researchers are warning parents that the hampers may be dangerous products. The products contain a flexible wire that winds around the outside of the hamper. The wire can be dangerous.

In one case, an 11-year-old boy's cornea was damaged when the wire on a collapsible hamper suddenly snapped up and hit his eye. A toddler was injured when she was poked in the eye by a wire that protruded from a hamper. Their eye injuries were considered very serious and required surgery in both cases. Both also required vision therapy because they developed ongoing problems from temporarily losing sight in one eye as a child.

One doctor says the children beat the odds to have recovered so successfully from a penetrating eye injury. While some patients recover perfect vision after these injuries, others regain no vision at all.

She urges parents to be aware that these hampers can be harmful to kids and to throw the hampers away if they are old or appear damaged. She had a couple collapsible hampers at her house, but threw them away after the injured children came to the hospital for treatment.

Dangerous products can injure or kill people in a surprising number of ways. Ordinary, seemingly harmless household products can have design or manufacturing defects that turn them from a useful device into a source of danger. When people are injured or killed by defective products, they may be able to hold the company responsible for their injuries through a product liability lawsuit.
