Premises liability: 24 injured when deck collapses at sports bar

A deck collapse at a sports bar could easily have been a fatal accident. The deck was crowded with fans who were watching the National Basketball Association finals when it fell into the bay below. The collapse injured 24 people, including two people in serious condition.

A Fire Department spokeswoman said that so many people were watching the game and cheering that some people did not notice right away what had happened. Others reported hearing a loud noise that sounded like an explosion. One man, visiting the area from Los Angeles, believed a boat had struck the deck, and when he looked outside, he saw people in the water below.

Other customers at the sports bar then began rescuing people stuck in the water and searching for victims who could be submerged in the four-feet deep water. Many seemed in shock, with gashes on their faces.

Initially, rescuers were worried that people were trapped beneath the deck. Divers went into the deck's remains while helicopters shined spotlights on the scene. Fortunately, rescue crews believe they had accounted for everyone. The Florida city where the sports bar is located is investigating the cause of the accident.

While this accident happened in Florida, deck collapses can and do happen in Los Angeles. Property owners have a responsibility to make sure that their decks are properly maintained and used. When decks are overloaded or not properly constructed or maintained, the consequences can include serious injuries or deaths.
