What is post-concussion syndrome?

A concussion is a mild brain injury that can come from injuries at work, car accidents, athletics and other accidents. In most cases, the symptoms of a concussion ease as the brain heals. But in some cases, the symptoms of a brain injury can persist for weeks or months afterward. This condition is called post-concussion syndrome.

Post-concussion syndrome can be frustrating for injury victims because the symptoms can cause difficulty with work and day-to-day activities, but the condition can be difficult to diagnose. The symptoms can be vague and can be caused by other conditions, and there is no single test to detect the syndrome. Doctors diagnose the condition based largely on having a history of head injury and other symptoms and a physical exam.

Despite the difficulty with diagnosis, post-concussion syndrome is a real disorder with symptoms that can include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Irritability, anxiety and depressed mode
  • Problems with concentration, thinking and memory

Health care providers can treat the symptoms of this condition. Pain medications may be prescribed for headache. Neurologists or psychiatrists may help treat symptoms that affect mental health. Ultimately, most people with this syndrome can recover with stressed and by minimizing stress.
