Man faces manslaughter charges after motorcycle accident

Motorcyclists often face a greater number of dangers on the roadway than the drivers of other motor vehicles. Motorcyclists, for example, have little to protect them from injury apart from leather clothing and a helmet; things like roadway obstructions or animal strikes can result in serious injuries.

The greatest danger to motorcyclists, however, is other motorists. Accidents between cars and motorcycles are, unfortunately, not uncommon. One of the most dangerous types of accidents is the left-turn collision, in which a car or truck makes a left turn across an oncoming lane of traffic, striking a motorcyclist coming from the opposite direction. Motorcyclists are often unable to stop quickly enough to avoid a collision, and so they are struck by the turning car.

This appears to have been the case in a tragic collision in Truckee, California, in which a 41-year-old motorcyclist was struck and killed. The motorcyclist was traveling eastbound when the driver of a westbound Volkswagen sedan suddenly turned left across his lane. The collision threw the motorcyclist from his bike. He landed in the eastbound lane, where he was struck by a white van.

Four off-duty corrections officers happened to be on hand to provide first aid; despite their best efforts, however, the man died at the scene.

The 23-year-old driver of the Volkswagen was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter for his part in the incident. He was also allegedly driving with a suspended license, leading to additional charges.

Police say the driver of the white van is not believed to have committed any sort of misconduct; there are no indications he or she will be charged with anything.

When a fatal accident occurs, family members are often left with a number of difficult expenses. Medical bills, funeral expenses and lost wages can all make a terrible situation even harder. In such cases, family members have a right to seek compensation for their losses from the negligent party that caused the accident. Such an action not only provides the financial support the family requires, but also provides an extra layer of justice to the situation, a measure that helps ensure such an accident will never happen again.
