21-year-old woman accused of drunk driving fatal car wreck

Drunk driving is a serious crime in California, and for very good reason. Drunk drivers often commit extremely dangerous and deadly driving infractions, putting all motorists at risk.

Wrong-way driving, in particular, is one of the most dangerous behaviors that can be seen on the road. Wrong-way drivers often strike other vehicles head-on and at such speeds that the other motorists have no time to react. Unfortunately, drunk drivers sometimes misread freeway off-ramp signs, entering traffic late at night in the wrong direction.

This was apparently the case in a tragic accident in Los Angeles County recently. In the early morning hours last Sunday, a 21-year-old woman allegedly entered a freeway in the wrong direction and struck two other vehicles. Witnesses report that the woman's Chevrolet Camaro was traveling in excess of 100 mph at the time of the impact; authorities believe drunk driving was a factor.

The collision had fatal consequences. Six people were killed in the collision, including a family of four and the 21-year-old woman's own sister. The driver herself survived the crash with injuries that included a broken leg and a ruptured bladder.

The woman is now facing criminal charges for her involvement in the collision, including felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter. If convicted, the woman will likely face long-term imprisonment.

This will do nothing to repay the victims' families for the losses they have suffered, however. A large-scale accident such as this one can wreak havoc on the emotional and financial well-being of an entire family. Often, after fatal car accidents, families of the victims pursue wrongful death actions against the drivers responsible; this can help families recover compensation for the many losses they have suffered.
