Suspected drunk driver crashes into California house

Usually, we consider drunk drivers to be a risk to motorists. After all, thousands of alcohol-related car accidents occur each year. It pays to remember that a drunk driver is in command of a heavy vehicle; he or she can do damage wherever that vehicle comes to rest. Often, drunk driving sprees end by running into a ditch or striking another motorist. Sometimes, however, drivers turn onto sidewalks or even into buildings.

This was the case in a Los Angeles suburb this month, when a man suspected of drunk driving plowed his car into the home of a sleeping family. The car accident occurred at around 2 a.m. at the home of a Costa Mesa family. A 25-year-old driver apparently failed to negotiate a turn and drove through the family's master bedroom and guest bedroom wall.

Miraculously, no one was killed in the car accident. A 44-year-old woman, the wife and mother of the family, was injured in the collision. Sources say she suffered facial lacerations; she was taken to a hospital for treatment.

According to the woman's husband, the incident could have been much worse. "A few feet, one way or another, and my wife or I or my kids could be dead right now," he said.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. The man's 24-year-old passenger also required hospitalization.

Clearly, all parties involved were fortunate that the consequences were not fatal. However, even in incidents that do not cause serious injuries, the damage can still be significant. Medical bills can be enormously high, even for treating minor injuries, and mental distress can be a very real and debilitating concern. These are often points of concern after DUI accidents, as victims seek compensation for the injuries they have suffered.
