Los Angeles County found liable in a two-motorcycle accident

Last Thursday, a Burbank jury found Los Angeles County liable in a two motorcycle accident that occurred more than two years ago. One of the victims, an elderly man left with severe spinal fractures, received a total award of nearly $770,000 in the month-long courtroom proceedings.

In October of 2011, a man driving a motorcycle spun out after coming into contact with loose gravel a county Public Works road crew left behind on Little Tujunga Road. The man lost control of his motorcycle, which slid out from under him and crossed the yellow lines before careening head-first into a second motorcycle. The elderly accident victim suffered serious injuries to the back in the accident.

An attorney representing the accident victim stated the man received three fractures to the thoracic spine and came close to paralysis. He also reported that the victim's back injury still bothers him more than two years after the accident. In addition to suing Los Angeles County, the victim also initiated litigation against the motorcyclist who struck him. The jury acquitted the first driver after viewing photos of the accident site, which revealed a significant amount of gravel littering the roadway.

After a trial that lasted a month, the jury determined the Los Angeles County road crew was the sole cause of the accident victim's serious injuries. The jury awarded the victim $123,000 to cover both past and future medical expenses as well as $640,000 for pain and suffering.

While this was not a fatal accident caused by a distracted or negligent driver, it illustrates how an accident victim can receive justice under the guidance of an attorney specializing in motorcycle accidents. We trust our city and county officials to ensure a reasonable amount of protection when we are out in the public. In cases where accidental injuries occur due to negligence, it often falls to America's judicial system to help victims win a judgment that adequately covers medical expenses and brings relief for any pain and suffering caused by the event.
