Defective bed handles recalled for fatal safety hazard

Bed rails and bed handles are often used by elderly people to help them get out of bed or to provide additional support. Bed handles can be very helpful for people who need some assistance. Unfortunately, some bed handles also pose dangerous hazards that can cause serious and even fatal injuries.

A recent recall of bed handles made by Bed Handles Inc. is an example of the dangers some bed handles can pose to consumers. The manufacturer of the bed handle, along with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, recently recalled roughly 113,000 portable bed handles for safety hazards after three women died after getting stuck between the bed handle and their mattress.

They said the bed handles that don't have safety straps can move and leave a gap between the handle and the mattress. This is dangerous because people using the bed handle can fall between the side of the mattress and the handle and result in suffocation or even death The manufacturer said the bed handle should only be used with a safety strap to make sure the bed handle cannot move and create a gap.

This recall highlights the dangers of bed handles and other products commonly used by elderly people in their own homes and in assisted living facilities. Many people rely on these products to help them complete activities of daily living and to maintain a sense of independence.

Tragically, when a product is defective or unsafe to use, many people may end up getting hurt. This is unacceptable and should not be tolerated because no one should be injured, let alone killed, due to a defective product that was designed to help them get out of bed.

Like we discussed in previous posts, victims injured by defective products and families of victims killed by these dangerous products can take legal action against the manufacturer to hold them accountable for their negligence.
