Football player-turned-actor sues NFL over brain injuries

One of the biggest class-action suits to make headlines in recent years is the lawsuit against the National Football League filed by current and former players. The plaintiffs allege that the NFL knew about the dangers and long-term consequences of traumatic brain injuries for decades but withheld this information and even went to great lengths to cover it up.

Among longtime NFL veterans who have since retired, the effects of a lifetime of concussions are fairly plain to see. Certain retired players have come forward with their stories of suffering memory loss, mood swings, severe headaches and unaffordable medical bills. Some have even committed suicide and were posthumously diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a condition caused by repeated brain injuries.

The damaging effects of concussions are evident even among players who were only in the league for a short time. This includes Brian Bosworth, who became an actor after playing in the NFL for just three seasons, two of which were as a linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks.

Bosworth alleges that due to multiple concussions he suffered during his NFL days, he continues to suffer from memory loss and headaches. He recently filed a lawsuit against the NFL, Riddell Sports Group and Easton-Bell Sports. The latter two defendants are the manufacturers of league-mandated equipment, including helmets.

According to his complaint, “Bosworth was not warned by the . . . defendants of the risk of long-term injury due to football-related concussions or that the league-mandate equipment did not protect him from such injury. This was a substantial factor in causing his current injury.” The action-movie actor is apparently one of more than 200 players who opted out of the larger settlement offer of $765 million in order to pursue their own lawsuits.

The damaging effects of traumatic brain injury can no longer be minimized or ignored. If you or a loved one has suffered a brain injury as the result of another’s negligence, please share your story with an experienced personal injury attorney.
