Southern California roads will be especially dangerous this weekend

Although the Super Bowl this weekend is conspicuously short on California teams, most of us will likely be watching anyway. And there are few better ways to watch the Super Bowl than surrounded by family and friends, enjoying some good food and your favorite alcoholic beverages.

But as you finalize your Super Bowl plans, please keep in mind that travel will be dangerous on Sunday. According to statistics cited in a recent L.A. Times article, the number of alcohol-related car accidents causing injury or death spikes significantly on Super Bowl Sunday. In Los Angeles alone, the alcohol-related crash rate is 77 percent higher than on any normal Sunday during January or February. In some parts of Southern California, the crash risk is even higher.

The most dangerous time to be on the roads appears to be between 5:00 p.m. on Sunday and 4:00 a.m. on Monday. This makes sense, as most drinking occurs during the game and most drunk driving would take place after the game was finished.

If you’re worried about drunk drivers on the road on Sunday, you do have the option of watching the game at home so as to avoid driving altogether. If you do go out and are planning to drink, you may want to arrange for sober transportation ahead of time so that you don’t have to drive yourself home. This could be a designated driver, a ride-sharing service or a taxi.

California’s state insurance commissioner recently noted that “Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest one-day sporting event in the United States and unfortunately one of the most dangerous days on California’s roads and highways. Every one of us has a responsibility to ensure we do not contribute to the problem by allowing a drunk or drugged driver to hit the road on Super Bowl Sunday.”
