Armed Forces Week Is Here!

Armed Forces Week Is Here!

Every year, Armed Forces Week is celebrated the week leading up to Armed Forces Day. This year, Armed Forces Day falls on May 18th, which is why we want to let you know about this wonderful event that celebrates our service members.

What Is Armed Forces Week?

Armed Forces Week is time for American service members to remember past and present service for all branches of military.

How Is Armed Forces Week Celebrated?

There are a number of ways military communities observe Armed Forces Week, including:

  • Base-level gatherings
  • Parades
  • Military aircraft “flyovers”
  • Air shows
  • Luncheons
  • Fitness and health themed events

Because Armed Forces Week is not a federal holiday, many military bases usually offer extended access to the public so they can view “static displays” of aircraft or other military hardware on base.

Another common celebration during Armed Forces Week is special flag raising ceremonies or “retreat” events. New military vehicles, such as airplanes, ships, and helicopters, are also sometimes officially launched or christened during Armed Forces Week.

The History of Armed Forces Week

The first time Armed Forces Day was observed was on May 20, 1950. The idea was first created after all the military services were consolidated under the United States Department of Defense. Although Armed Forces Day/Week officially replaced separate Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Days, each service branch honors its members on its own day of the week. Some of the first Armed Forces Day/Week celebrations included parades, open houses, receptions, and air shows.

Biren Law Group would like to thank all members of the military for their service and everything they do to protect our freedom. To find out more about what we do to celebrate Armed Forces Week, call (310) 896-4345 to speak with a member of our law firm.
