Rizo-López Foods, which manufactures, distributes, and sells food products under several brand names, has recalled some of its dairy products due to listeria contamination. Investigators have already linked the listeria-contaminated dairy products to at least one death in California, eight serious illnesses in several states, and another 17 milder cases that did not require medical attention. It is believed that many other cases have not been reported yet, though.

Recalled cheese, yogurt, and sour cream products are sold under these brand names:

  • 365 Whole Foods Market
  • Campesino
  • Casa Cardenas
  • Don Francisco
  • Dos Ranchitos
  • El Hauche
  • Food City
  • La Ordena
  • Rio Grande
  • Rizo Bros
  • San Carlos
  • Santa Maria
  • Tio Franciso

Potentially contaminated products were sold mostly at these grocers:

  • Vallarta
  • Food City
  • Whole Foods
  • Cardenas Market
  • El Rancho
  • El Super
  • La Michoacana
  • Northgate Gonzalez
  • Numero Uno Markets
  • Superior Groceries

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned that listeria monocytogenes can cause potentially fatal infections when consumed, especially among children, elders, and people with compromised immune systems. Anyone who might have purchased any of the recalled items should immediately discard them after photographing the product and/or proof of purchase. Anyone who ate the products recently is advised to seek medical attention if they are showing any symptoms of listeria infection (listeriosis), which typically includes fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Is Rizo-López Foods Liable for the Listeria Outbreak?

Strict product liability laws could make Rizo-López Foods liable for any injuries, illnesses, and deaths caused by the listeria-contaminated dairy products. An FDA inspection determined the listeria outbreak originated within a Rizo-López Foods facility where cheeses are stored before packing. If you or a loved one became ill after eating a dairy product labeled under one of the brand names mentioned above, you may be able to demand compensation and justice through an injury claim.
